Vanilla Lavender Latte ~ This hot drink is made with vanilla beans and lavender buds for a relaxing way to start or end a busy day.

After I posted a photo of my lavender latte to Instagram last week, many of you asked me for the recipe, so I'm sharing it today. It is a simple and relaxing recipe for when life gets a little overwhelming. I discovered the combination at a local coffee shop and have been drinking it every day ever since, it is relaxing and unique. Do not be afraid of lavender, it is really very subtle, and the combination with vanilla is lovely.

Featured Ingredient: culinary grade lavender

Culinary lavender is grown specifically for eating and cooking, and your best bet is to buy it online. Lavender is an herb, and while all varieties are edible, some taste better than others. You don't want to risk consuming any plants that have been treated with chemicals or pesticides, so always look for lavender labeled 'Culinary Grade', or grow your own! Both leaves and buds can be used in recipes.

Lattes traditionally don't involve frothy milk, but I love the texture, so I generally lather up mine. I love my little Nespresso steamer, it's quick and easy. But if you don't have one, don't worry, you can easily froth milk without any special device ~

How to froth milk without foam ~

  • Pour the milk into a mason jar. Close the lid tightly and shake vigorously for a full minute.

  • Remove the lid and microwave it on high for 30 seconds.

  • Your milk is hot and frothy and ready to use.

  • Note: Milk milk, specifically low-fat or fat-free milk milk, is the best foam, but you can also use almonds or soy.

Preparation time: 5 minutes

Total time 6 minutes

  • 1/2 cup of hot coffee or espresso
  • 1/2 cup low-fat milk is perfect (use almond or soy milk for vegans)
  • 1 teaspoon culinary grade lavender buds
  • 1/2 vanilla bean
  • 1 teaspoon of honey optional

  • buds and / or leaves of lavender
  • Heat the milk, lavender, vanilla beans, and honey (if you use it) in the microwave or on the stove, just until simmering. Let stand for 5 minutes, then strain.

  • Pour the hot coffee into a cup, then cover with the hot milk. I like to froth the milk before adding it, but that is your choice.

  • Decorate with a few lavender buds and enjoy.
