Packed with delicious fillings, this is not the usual recipe for a ham sandwich. I usually stack the fillings on a long French baguette and then cut it into small sandwiches. Regardless of how you do it, it won't last long.
I'll serve this ham sandwich for Christmas gatherings, family movie night, easy lunches, and snacks all year long.

We've made this amazing sandwich so many times in the past few years, that I wanted to share it again, to make sure you have the recipe fresh in your memory and on your fingertips when you have leftover ham in the house afterwards. Thanksgiving and Christmas this year.
Ham Sandwich Recipe
On our last morning in Sioux Falls, Chef Neel made a similar sandwich while we were cooking all the different pork recipes. He called this the "best ham sandwich." While I knew it would be good, I am reluctant to label anything as the "best" of its kind.

I took a bite and they sold me. This was, in fact, the cream of the crop for ham sandwiches. The creamy goat cheese and the tasty ham were a perfect combination. A tablespoon of spicy pepper jam brought everything to breathtaking heights.
I knew right away that I would be making my own best ham sandwich after coming home. The recipe that I share with you today is one that you will want to make over and over again.
How to make the best ham sandwich
To make this ham sandwich, I followed Chef Neel's lead and started with a fresh French baguette. I picked up mine from the bakery section at my local supermarket, but I'm sure a homemade baguette would taste great too.
After cutting the bread in half lengthwise, spread each side with a thick layer of beaten goat cheese. Then arugula and thin slices of ham are stacked. The best ham sandwich is topped off with a tablespoon of hot pepper jelly with a spoon on top.
A baguette sandwich can be cut into sections to feed four people for lunch. This is also the perfect party sandwich. Cut it into eight sections to serve as an appetizer!
My family can never get enough party and snack ideas, so this sandwich is perfect for us. I have done it twice and my children are already ordering "the luxurious Ham Sandwich" again.
You can do this on classic French bread, on a baguette, on hoagie rolls, on toast, on whole wheat bread, the possibilities are endless here. You can make the sandwich as filling or light as you want by simply adjusting the amounts of each ingredient.
When I make these sandwiches for a quick dinner, I stack them with lots of ham slices. As a snack or party snack, I'll be a little lighter on the meat. I love how adaptable this recipe is for any occasion.
Note that you can sigh when you bite into this sweet and savory sandwich. If you are a ham lover (or even if you are not!) This sandwich deserves the name "The best ham sandwich you will ever eat!"
I can hardly believe I am so excited about a ham sandwich, but I promise it is well worth the hype. Right now, I admit that I am quite excited about making these sandwiches as often as possible. I have to remember to make room for all the other party sandwiches we like again!

The best ham sandwich you'll ever eat
Servings: 4 servings (as food) 8 servings (as an appetizer)
- 1 French baguette about 30-36 inches
- 6 ounces smoothie or extra creamy goat cheese
- 4-6 tablespoons of spicy pepper jam
- 2 ounces arugula
- 1 pound thinly sliced ham
Cut the bread in half lengthwise, forming two flat halves. Spread the goat cheese on each bread section. Arugula layer in the lower half and then ham on the vegetables. Fold and crumble the ham while placing it on the bread. Roll heaps of ham on top of the bread to create the best texture.
Place the jam over the goat cheese on the top half of the bread. Close the sandwich and cut it into smaller sections. Serve immediately.
If you're not a fan of goat cheese, this sandwich works well with whipped cream cheese, too. However, cream cheese will not have the same depth of flavor as the goat cheese in this sandwich. My favorite way to make this sandwich is with Cranberry Pepper Jam. If you can find it in store, please buy it. However, if you have about 15 minutes, you can make yours!
