Salsa Morita – This is one for all my colleagues with spicy food.

My mom wanted me to make a salsa burnt. Yes, that was her word. LAUGH OUT LOUD! This is what I came up with.

Smokey. Hot. Delicious in every way!

Of course she LOVED it.

Do not worry. I'll show you how to adjust so that it doesn't send you continuously for a glass of water.

These are the ingredients you need.

Replace options: Use 1/4 tablespoon of onion powder instead of the onion. Use 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder instead of garlic. Use a small 8 ounce can of tomato sauce instead of fresh tomato.

You can also add 2 tablespoons white distilled vinegar to make it last longer.

Dried Chile Morita is a type of chipotle pepper.

It is a smoked, ripe jalapeno pepper that is small and fiery.

Rich, smokey and slightly fruity to taste.

  • Put the morita chile in a storage pot.
  • Cover with water. Boil up.
  • Turn off the heat. Let's sit in the pan for 5 minutes.

How to rehydrate all dried chiles – chile ancho, guajillo chile, chile de arbol.

If they are not pliable after 5 minutes, let them sit in the hot water for longer.

Pro Tip: You can even do this in advance. Rehydrated chiles last up to 5 days in the refrigerator.

  • Discard the water.
  • Set it aside until ready to use.

Many Mexican abuelitas (mine included) like to use the water from the rehydration process to mix the sauce.

Bugs and dust can hide in dried chile slits. Discard the water and Use fresh water to avoid this.

How to adjust the heat

Mild salsa – Remove the seeds from the chile. This will still give you a flavorful and only mildly spicy sauce.

Warm the salsa – leave the seeds in as the sauce mixes.

  • Put tomatoes, onions and garlic on a plate.
  • Cook for 7 minutes. Turn and broil for another 5 minutes.

Really good idea! Try this recipe with tomatillos. It gives a tangy flavor.

You can do this too on a baking sheet. Carefully rotate the ingredients when charred on all sides.

  • Put all the ingredients in a blender.
  • Blend until smooth.

Do you like it thick and thick? Try making this in a molcajete as in Molcajete Salsa Verde or Tomato Molcajete Salsa.

OR use a food processor and pulse to the desired consistency.

How long does it last?

In the refrigerator it lasts up to 5 days. In the freezer, place in an airtight sealed bag for up to 6 months.

This Salsa Morita recipe has the BEST flavor! Smokey, spicy and easy to make. It is so much better than anything you can buy in a store. Grab some chips and dig in! ingredients

  • 10 chile morita
  • 2 cups of water
  • 3 large tomatoes (or 5 small tomatoes)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 1/4 onions

Instructions

  • Place the morita chile in a large storage pot and cover with water.
  • Boil up.
  • Turn off the heat immediately.
  • Let sit for 5 minutes or until it is pliable.
  • Discard the water.
  • Set it aside until ready to use.
  • Block the tomatoes.
  • Place tomatoes, onions and garlic on a cookie sheet.
  • Cook for 7 minutes.
  • Turn and place under the broiler for another 5 minutes.
  • Add the rehydrated chilies, tomatoes, onions and garlic in a blender.
  • Blend until smooth.
  • Enjoy!
