Are oats gluten free? This is a kind of trick question. I will explain. The oatmeal itself does not contain gluten. However, the problem that arises is that in planting oat crops, harvesting, milling, and transporting oats, they are often cross-contaminated with wheat, rye, or barley, which are grains that contain gluten. So yes, oatmeal is inherently gluten-free but is contaminated with gluten at the surface level, sometimes in large quantities, sometimes in small quantities. For people with true celiac disease, gluten should be avoided at all costs.

For people like me who are gluten sensitive and gluten intolerant, but it is it's not a matter of life and death, each of them if they choose to buy specifically certified gluten-free oatmeal. My gluten intolerance is not sensitive enough that I need to do this and I am fine using conventional oatmeal, but I am not eating more than 1/3 cup per day either or I will feel the effects systemically; but..

… ”There are several companies that now sell“ certified gluten-free oats, ”which are oats that are grown, harvested, processed, and packaged using special methods to avoid gluten cross-contamination every step of the way. Gluten-free oatmeal currently sells for around $ 4 to $ 5 per pound. " (source)

If you feel like organic oatmeal, Trader Joe's or WF's many varieties of oatmeal, bulk containers at your food cooperative, or even Quaker Oats won't suffice and you need a truly gluten-free option, check out Gluten Free Oats or Bob's Red. Mill GF Oatmeal.

That was a long answer, but like I said, it's complicated and Only your own personal detective job will tell you whether you need GF certified oatmeal or not.
