Why we love the instant pot for quick dinners

We could sing praises all day about why we love the Instant Pot, especially for easy dinners or meal preparation. This appliance is not only good for getting the quick work of long braised dishes like beef barbecue or pork carnitas, but it's also particularly good for easy week-long dinners that don't really require much hands-on preparation. First of all, we cook meals in Instant Pot because it's convenient, but we also love how certain dishes taste better in Instant Pot, like Mac and Cheese.

Useful instant pot terminology

Manual pressure: This refers to the actual button indicating that you are using the pressure cooker function on some Instant Pot models. Some only have a button that says cook pressure.

Pressure release valve: This is the knob on top of the instant pot lid that seals off the steam that creates the pressure. When using the pressure cooker, it must be in the "Sealed" position. It does not close tightly, but simply moves from one position to another. This is also the valve that you must move when you finish cooking to quickly release the pressure (see below).

Quick pressure release: A recipe will tell you how you are going to release the pressure once the food has finished cooking. If it indicates Quick Pressure Release, you will move the pressure release valve to the “Vent” position, carefully. Steam will quickly escape from the valve.

Natural pressure release: A recipe will tell you how you are going to release the pressure once the food has finished cooking. If it indicates natural pressure release, it will keep the pressure release valve in the "sealed" position. Sometimes a recipe says a natural pressure release for just 10 minutes. After the machine indicates an LO 10 at the interface, it will move the valve to the vent position and release the remaining steam. LO indicated the time elapsed since the pressure cooker timer has expired.

Coating or pot: This is the actual container in which you cook food. It is the metal inner lining that can be removed from the instant pot for cleaning.
