Homemade Italian Cream Soda

Valentine's Day is just around the corner. I like to invent a special gift a year to surprise my children. A kind of tradition that I have had since they were little. You might think it's kinda cheesy now that they're not little kids anymore, ha ha. This year for the holidays, I plan to make this recipe for homemade Italian cream sodas.

I was searching Pinterest for a red or pink drink that would be perfect for the holidays. I quickly came across a recipe found on the Butter with a Side of Bread blog. I had pictures of the most amazing Italian soft drinks with so many different options.

I hadn't realized how simple it is to make a homemade Italian cream soda. The recipe is basically soda, simple syrup and half and half. The flavor combinations are absolutely endless. I quickly thought that a strawberry and vanilla or raspberry and vanilla flavored soft drink would be perfect. I decided on later because my daughter loves raspberry flavors. I liked the recipe I found, but added additional syrup because I found that I needed more flavoring than the original recipe required.

I grew up in a very small town in upstate New York. When I was little, I remember my grandmother taking me to the local soda bar to enjoy what I thought were the best drinks. Since I was an adult, I often remember the excitement I had when we were going for that special drink, an Italian strawberry cream soda. Now I respect the whole atmosphere of the soda bar, the old school drink and of course the bar stools. The decor and all the offerings were nothing like what you can find today. Wow, it really brings back memories. That same soda bar closed years and years ago. It's a shame that most soda bars no longer exist.

These homemade Italian sodas will be perfect for serving on Valentine's Day. I can bore these kids with my memories of trips to the old school soda bar. They won't appreciate the stories that much now, but I'm sure that when they're older, they'll appreciate the memories I share.

If you plan to make these delicious flavored sodas, you will need to buy or make your own simple homemade syrups. I bought my vanilla and raspberry Torani syrups at my supermarket. You can usually find flavored syrups in the coffee section at most stores. You will need some ice, soda, and half a cream. Making homemade Italian cream soda is as simple as adding the ingredients to a tall glass. I covered mine with a little whipped topping and sparks. You can use whipped cream to make homemade whipped cream or Cool Whip works because it won't collapse while making additional drinks. I added some sparks of heart to make our specialty drinks a bit festive. Not necessary. I think they would also be great as a Christmas drink. I am adding them to my Christmas to make a list for the next season.
