Percy Jackson Blue Punch

Reading is one of our family's favorite summer activities, especially when it's too hot here in Texas to play outside.

Our oldest daughter is a huge fan of author Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson and Olympians series. Disney Book Group sent us the collection of 5 books at the beginning of the summer. My daughter loves them so much that she is already in her second time reading them!

What is the meaning of blue foods in Percy Jackson's books?

Originally I figured Percy's favorite color should be blue, as his mother regularly makes him blue-colored treats, like blue chocolate chip cookies.

However, my daughter corrected me: "Percy's stepfather told Percy's mother that there is no blue food." So to prove her wrong, she started making all kinds of blue foods!

Now I know! 🙂

While the books specifically mention blue cookies, cakes, and candy, we thought it would be fun to make our favorite summer drink blue too!

Our blue lemonade turned out incredibly blue and delicious. I'm sure Percy would approve!

The first step in making our blue lemonade is to cook a simple syrup, which is used to sweeten the lemonade.

To make simple syrup:

Bring 1 cup of hot water to a boil, then remove from heat.

Add 1 cup of sugar and stir until completely dissolved.

To make your blue lemonade:

Puree 1 cup blueberries and add the puree to a simple syrup (while still hot) and soak to get the blueberry color.

Strain the plain cranberry syrup into the pitcher with 4 cups of cold water and 1 cup of lemon juice (freshly squeezed) and stir.

Fill the rest of the jar with ice.

If desired, add blue food coloring for a super vibrant blue color. Cover with lightning sparks to complete your Percy Jackson Blue Punch.
