An easy smoothie coffee recipe

I love a good viral trend from TikTok or Instagram. With so many people at home these days, we are getting viral gold online. One of my favorites so far has been Dalgona, also known as smoothie coffee. I love watching the TikTok videos and the IG stories of the people who make it. So of course I want to share my Dalgona recipe with you.

Who does not like coffee, and elegant coffee in an elegant mirror? But, what excited me so much about this particular internet fad was that I've been doing it for years, and we Macedonians just call it Nes – it's short for NescafĂ©, which is a brand that makes instant coffee, the type of coffee that we will use to make this smoothie coffee.

What is Dalgona coffee?

If you find yourself trapped in a Dalgona coffee black hole on the internet, you will see many stories of where this sweet smoothie originated. The most common story tends to go back to South Korea in the 1950s. The name Dalgona comes from a Korean sweet that resembles smoothie coffee.

The smoothie I know, and have too much of every summer day, dates back to Macedonia in the late 1950s. Here, they used instant coffee, sugar, and boiling water and whipped it until it became frothy in a shaker or blender. . Then it was poured onto ice and milk.

You can think of it as the opposite of a coffee frappe where the coffee is on ice at the bottom of the glass and the milk is beaten and covered with a spoon on top. Turn it inside out: put the milk on the bottom with ice and a spoon of beaten coffee on top, and you will get Dalgona coffee, also known as beaten coffee.
