- 1 cup (1/2 lb) salted butter
- 1 pound light brown sugar (about 2 1/4 cups)
- 2 cups flour
- 1 cup walnuts or chopped walnuts
- 1 large egg
- 1 cup applesauce
- 2 teaspoons of cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon of baking soda
- Preheat oven to 250 degrees. Lightly grease a 9 × 13-inch baking pan; set aside.
- Combine butter, brown sugar, flour, and walnuts in large bowl; mix until well combined. Set aside 1 cup to cover.
- Add egg, applesauce, cinnamon, and baking soda to the butter and flour mixture; mix well. Pour into the pan and sprinkle with 1 cup of remaining topping.
- Bake for 50 minutes. Serve hot as is or topped with vanilla ice cream and caramel syrup (optional). It also tastes great as a chilled cake!
