How to make apple butter

Apple butter is similar to applesauce except that it is simmered and simmered throughout the day. This helps the apple butter thicken and caramelize slightly and really enhance the apple flavors.

Here's how to make apple butter in the slow cooker:

  1. Peel, core and chop the apples. Fill your clay pot to the top!
  2. Add the spices, I used cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves.
  3. Cook over high heat for 4-5 hours, or low for 8-10 hours.
  4. Puree well with an immersion blender.

That's! As you can see, most of the job is cutting the apples. Once you are in the slow cooker, there is very little else to do!

What type of apple should I use for this apple butter crockpot recipe? You can use almost any apple you want. I chose ambrosia because they are in season now and they are cheap at the grocery store! You can use Granny Smith, Fuji, Macintosh, Golden Delicious, Gala, really, use whatever apple is in season!

Should I add sweetener to this apple butter crockpot recipe? No! It's pretty sweet since it basically concentrates an apple… so it's even sweeter than an apple!

Does apple butter thicken as it cools? Yes! You can see from the pictures of the clay pot that it was thinner when it was still hot. As it cools it thickens a little.

Does apple butter need to be refrigerated? Yes. Store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. You can freeze for up to 3 months. If you freeze in jars, make sure they're only 3/4 full and that you leave the lids open.

Crockpot Apple Butter is the tastiest fall treat! No added sugar, thick and buttery, with pure concentrated apple flavor.

Preparation time 30 minutes

Cook time 8 hours

Total time 8 h 30 min

  • 6 pounds apples (approximately; see *; peeled, cored, and cut into 1/2-inch pieces)
  • 1 tablespoon of cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon of nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon of ground ginger

  • Place the peeled and chopped apples in the base of a 6-quart slow cooker. Add the spices.

  • Cover and cook over high heat for 4-5 hours or over low heat for 8-10 hours. You may want to stir it in half (only once).

  • After cooking, mix until smooth using an immersion blender. Alternatively, you can batch work and carefully mash the apple butter in a blender.

  • Chill and store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. It can be frozen for up to 6 months; be sure to leave the lids ajar and leave room for expansion if it's freezing in the jars.

* I honestly didn't measure, but I filled the slow cooker to the brim with peeled and chopped apples. They will reduce their size substantially during cooking time, so be sure to fill it to the top!
