Apple's Spicy, Sweet, and Lightly Spiced Butter is my middle-son's favorite homemade fruit variety and it's about time I shared it with you.

Several years ago, I started making fruit jams, jellies, butters, and sauces at home and discovered how simple they are to make and how much better they taste than store bought ones.

I used a jar of apple butter on this spiced apple butter pork roast a while back and realized I had never shared the butter recipe itself.

I have made some different versions of apple butter; This is my favorite. The apple flavor is not dominated by a lot of different spices and it is not too sweet for my tastes.

When done on the stove, this takes a considerable amount of time and much more effort. With a slow cooker, all the hassle is eliminated. Just add the ingredients toAnd walk away.

It really is that easy and it's the only way I make this recipe now.

While it may take up to ten hours to do this slow cook applesauce, The vast majority of that time is completely free.

You can start it in the morning and enjoy the fragrance of apple butter on low heat throughout the day, or put it in the slow cooker before bed to wake up to the aroma of cinnamon and apples.

The delicious aroma of simmering apples is one of my favorite things about making apple butter in a slow cooker.

I can do this?

If you're new to canning, this is a great place to start. I use a simple boiling water bath for this recipe that requires little more than sterile jars and lids and a pot large enough to fit in your jars.

Be sure to follow proper packaging procedures for safety and efficacy. When it's done, the canned apple butter will last for months or even a couple of years without the need for refrigeration (until it's sealed, of course).

And people LOVE receiving homemade gifts. (I know yes! Homemade gifts are my favorite type of gift.)

Make a large batch of this spread several times a year so you always have a jar on hand to give away as a teacher, hostess gift, or to share with a friend "just because."

How to use apple butter

I'm not exaggerating when I say the The uses are countless. Of course, it's delicious as a spread for toast, muffins, and crackers. Who can resist a peanut butter and apple butter sandwich? Peanut butter and apples are a classic combination that everyone loves.

However, it's also incredibly good in Spiced Apple Butter Pork Chops, as an ingredient in marinade or chicken sauce, and naturally in all kinds of desserts and baked goods.

Make a quick breakfast every day more exciting by mixing a generous tablespoon in a bowl of oatmeal or yogurt.

Apple butter recipe

  1. Place the apples in the pot and top with the sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Cover with lid and set to HIGH. After a few hours, uncover, stir, and continue cooking without the lid.

  2. Continue to simmer until the mixture is thick and dark brown. Stir occasionally as needed to prevent sticking. When the liquid is absorbed, after 8-10 hours, mix until smooth. (I use an immersion blender directly in the slow cooker.) However, you can also transfer the apple mix to a blender and puree it that way.
  3. Once the apples are pureed, you can adjust the thickness by leaving the apples in the slow cooker on LOW and uncovering. It will slowly thicken that way. Stir occasionally to avoid sticking to the sides of the slow cooker. (I usually leave mine simmering that way for 30 minutes to 2 hours.)

  4. When the mixture has thickened and finished, transfer it immediately to sterile canning jars.

This apple butter is everything you could want from homemade preserves and much more. Is:

  • Packed with spicy goodness, lightly spiced
  • Just the right amount of sweet without being too sugary
  • Full of apple flavor
  • Easy to make, preserve and store.
  • Versatile enough to use on all kinds of both candy and tasty recipes
  • I mentioned that EASY?

Once you do this once, I know you will want to come back to this recipe over and over again.

Can I make a smaller batch?

YES! I often make this recipe with just a couple of pounds of apples, 1 cup of sugar, 2/3 teaspoon of cinnamon, and a pinch of salt. It works great to use some apples that are near the end of your treat.

Simply transfer the smallest finished batch to a jar and store it in the refrigerator.
