Are you cold these days? A glass of tasty and hot mulled red wine will bring color back to your frozen cheeks 🙂

It's only a few days before Christmas and winter is here! The days are really cold and today we had our first light snowfall. Admittedly, it lasted only a couple of minutes, but it was beautiful to watch him from the warmth of the office with a good cup of hot coffee in my hands.

Winter temperatures are best handled with hot liquids. Hot bowls of soup, cups of hot tea and, a classic, a cup of hot spiced red wine and some delicious Christmas cookies.

Last weekend we were visiting the stalls of the Christmas market, just eating sugar-coated almonds and warming ourselves with warm red wine. And that wine disappointed. There is hardly any wine there, just plenty of spices, sugar and hot water. Immediately he was craving the real thing.

Mulled red wine is ridiculously easy to make, and if you make it yourself, you can control the amount of sugar and alcohol. There is absolutely no reason why you shouldn't make yourself a cup right now. This is the perfect Christmas drink!

We are used to watering wine and use the 1: 1 ratio (1 serving of wine to 1 serving of water). You can skip the water for a stronger drink, but we like it this way.

Comforting warm red wine

Mulled Red Wine is a Christmas classic that will warm your heart and soul. Try this 15-minute recipe for Christmas!

Ingredients

  • 0.5 l of red wine (Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon)
  • 0.5 l of water
  • 5 tablespoons of sugar
  • 1 Teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 10 teeth
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 organic orange

Instructions

  1. Wash and dry the orange and cut it into slices.
  2. Put a pot on the stove and pour the wine and water, add sugar, vanilla essence, cloves, cinnamon and orange slice and bring to a slow boil.
  3. When the wine is boiling, lower the heat to a simmer and let it cook for a couple of minutes, stirring occasionally to melt the sugar. Wine should never boil vigorously, but gently. The longer you boil the wine, the less alcohol it will contain.
  4. Serve hot in glasses or cups, decorated with orange slices.

You can change this basic recipe and add different Christmas spices like nutmeg or star anise. Or why not eat bananas and add other types of fruit, like blueberries and twist mulled red wine into a Christmas punch? And if you're feeling naughty, you could even pour a pinch of dark rum or bourbon there. But make sure no one sees it.
