My favorite way to cook cabbage
This is a simple, delicious, and healthy recipe for cooking cabbage. It is also my preferred method. If you've never sauteed cabbage before, you should start.
As the cabbage cooks in the pan, it wilts, becomes tender, and becomes sweet. Cabbage may sound like a boring side, but this is one of our favorite sides to make.
Cabbage is underrated and an inexhaustible source of nutrients. It is good for you with high levels of vitamin C, it is rich in antioxidants and has been shown to have anti-inflammatory benefits.
We love cabbage in many ways, but our favorite way to cook it is to sauté it with a little fat on the stove. In this easy recipe, we stay healthy and cook cabbage in olive oil, but you can trade it for other fats. Try butter, coconut oil, or walnut oils like walnuts. You can even cook a few pieces of bacon before cabbage and use the processed bacon fat for extra flavor; We make it for our easy recipe for fried cabbage with bacon.

Making the recipe
Making this cabbage recipe couldn't be simpler. Heat a little fat in a skillet, add grated cabbage (I've shared my tips for shredding cabbage below), a little salt and pepper, and cook until wilted and sweet.
Simply sauteed cabbage cooked with olive oil, salt, and a little pepper is quite delicious, but when we have them in the kitchen, we love adding minced garlic and fresh lemon juice.
Garlic adds flavor, and lemon brightens the plate. If you don't have lemon, apple cider vinegar is an excellent substitute.
How to shred cabbage
I love the grated cabbage in this recipe. This is how I do it:
- Remove any tattered or bruised outer sheets.
- Cut the cabbage into quarters and then cut the core.
- Cut the cabbage quarters into thin pieces. You can shred by hand with a knife (as in the photos below), use a mandolin, or use your food processor shredding accessory.
Shredding cabbage makes it easier to remove the core. Cut the cabbage into quarters into thin pieces.

Cabbage Sauteed Garlic Lemon

This easy and healthy recipe for sauteed cabbage is delicious. As the cabbage cooks in the pan, it wilts, becomes tender, and becomes sweet. Cabbage may sound like a boring side, but this is one of our favorite dishes to prepare. White cabbage is our favorite for this, but other varieties of cabbage will work. However, keep in mind that Napa cabbage will release more moisture and will not brown as well in the pan.
Makes 4 servings
2 pounds white cabbage, cored and shredded (10 cups)
1 1/2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil
1 tablespoon minced garlic
Pinch of crushed red pepper flakes
1/2 teaspoon fine or more sea salt to taste
Half a lemon, cut into wedges
Heat the olive oil in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add cabbage, garlic, red pepper flakes, and salt. It may seem like too much cabbage for the pan, but as it cooks, the cabbage will wilt.
Cook, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage is tender and part of the cabbage begins to brown; 10 to 15 minutes.
Squeeze the juice of 2 lemon slices on the cabbage. Try and then adjust with more salt, pepper, and lemon juice as needed.

- To shred the cabbage, separate the cabbage through the core and then cut the core. Cut each quarter crosswise in half and finely grind. Rinse and twist or pat very dry.
- This cabbage recipe is great with onions, add them to the pan at the same time as the cabbage.
