The shrimp are tender, juicy, and the sweet and spicy orange chili sauce sauce perfectly complements the natural sweetness of the shrimp.

I could eat this all the time and I love shrimp, but I certainly don't have too many shrimp recipes on my site.

A couple of reasons are that my daughter doesn't like shrimp at all, and I won't even be amused. She will eat kale salads, but she will not eat shrimp.

And honestly, shrimp can be expensive, so I treat them as more than just a waste to me. Let's talk about the size and price of the shrimp.

What kind of shrimp to use

The reason the shrimp I buy is more expensive than other types of shrimp is because they are fresh, never frozen. I didn't try this recipe on frozen shrimp and while it would probably be "acceptable" it would not be my taste preference and not something I would do.

I also buy big shrimp. I used U15 in this recipe. That means there are 15 shrimp for 1 pound. U20 shrimp means there are 20 shrimp in 1 pound, making them smaller than U15 shrimp.

Or the shrimp can be described as a 12-16 count, which means there are approximately 12 to 16 shrimp at 1 pound. When you see things like 26-30 shrimp, that means there are 26-30 shrimp per pound, aka those fools are very small. The smaller the shrimp, the cheaper they are.

I like big, juicy and meaty shrimp and I am willing to pay a premium for them.

I buy deveined shrimp without the shells, except the tails are still on. In a recipe like this, I think that's the best presentation.

I could save a little money and buy intact shrimp and clean them myself, saving only the tail, rather than the butcher in the store doing it, but time is money.

And I don't love my hands and nails that smell like shrimp for 2 days, which is another reason why I keep cleaning for the butcher.

What is in the orange chili sauce?

It is essentially the same sauce that I used for this 15 minute chicken with broccoli with orange and chili. It is made with orange juice, chili and garlic sauce, soy sauce, brown sugar, sesame oil and rice vinegar to obtain a quintessential Asian flavor profile. A little spicy, a little spicy, a little salty and a little sweet, all in one.

It warms up a bit due to the 1/3 cup garlic and chili sauce. And then I used almost 1/3 cup of brown sugar to add some sweetness to that heat, so good.

You can use less garlic and chili sauce than I do if you're sensitive to heat, but the sauce isn't excessively hot after it's cooked with the chicken and the natural water from the broccoli dilutes it a bit.

What else can I use the sauce on?

You will also only use about half the lot. It keeps very well in the fridge for at least a week. It would be great on grilled chicken as a marinade or as something you brush during roasting.

Or make this chicken with chili and orange, which is the recipe that inspired this shrimp recipe.

Quick, easy dinner, 10 minutes

This is a quick and easy 10 minute dinner that is perfect for date nights. It has an elegant and impressive flavor. Serve it with vegetables or a salad, and this chocolate cake if you're really trying to impress someone, and you're good to go.

Or, have dinner Monday through Friday or when you don't want to turn on your oven and want something ready in no time.

Another added bonus is that shrimp are very low in calories, high in protein and naturally gluten-free.

10 Minute Orange Chili Shrimp – Sweet and spicy Asian-inspired orange chili sauce is PERFECT on these juicy, large shrimp! An EASY and healthy recipe that is sure to IMPRESS and will be ready in 10 minutes!

Ingredients:

Chili and orange sauce

  • 1/2 cup (or slightly more) of freshly squeezed orange juice (from about 1 large juicy orange)
  • 1/3 cup garlic and chili sauce, or to taste
  • 1/4 cup low sodium soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup light brown sugar, packaged; more more if you want
  • 2 tablespoons toasted sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, or to taste
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons cornstarch
  • 2 teaspoons cold water
  • 1 tablespoon of rice vinegar (can be substituted with apple cider vinegar)

Shrimp

  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil
  • 1 pound fresh, clean and deveined shrimp (I use U15 shrimp, with the tails still; you can use smaller shrimp or shrimp without tails if desired)
  • 1 lemon, cut into slices
  • fresh parsley, optional for garnish

Addresses:

  1. Chili and orange sauce – In a small saucepan, add the orange juice (Tip – If your oranges are cold from being refrigerated, microwave the whole orange for about 30 seconds or until it feels slightly warm to the touch. A hot orange will release much more juice that one cold), chili and garlic sauce, soy sauce, sesame oil, pepper and bring to a boil over medium-high heat; stir frequently. Let the mixture boil for about 2 minutes.
  2. In a small bowl, add the cornstarch, water and stir to combine to make a suspension.
  3. Add the suspension to the boiling mixture and stir continuously for about 1 minute, or until the mixture thickens slightly.
  4. Remove the pan from the heat, add the vinegar, stir to combine, and try to balance the seasoning. I prefer to add extra brown sugar but I like my sauces on the sweeter side. Set the sauce aside from the fire.
  5. Shrimp – In a large skillet, add oil, shrimp, and cook for about 1 to 2 minutes per side, or until light pink and almost done. Depending on the size of the shrimp, you may only need to cook them for 45 to 60 seconds per side; don't cook too much
  6. When the shrimp are almost done, add a generous tablespoon of sauce to the top of each shrimp (for me, this is about 1 tablespoon per shrimp). Note: You will not use all of the sauce and will have about half of the leftovers; You can make this chicken with orange chili or use it as a chicken marinade.
  7. Allow shrimp to simmer in sauce over medium-low heat for another minute or so, or until fully cooked; don't cook too much
  8. Squeeze lemon juice on top of shrimp and / or add lemons to pan for flavor or presentation, optionally garnish with parsley and serve immediately. Shrimp are lukewarm and fresh, but will stay airtight in the refrigerator for up to 2 days; the additional sauce will remain airtight in the fridge for at least 7 to 10 days.
