Try Chocolate Strawberries For A Healthy Snack Alternative
Chocolate strawberries and antioxidants
The sweet little red fruit known as the strawberry is one of nature’s gifts to the health-conscious. It’s low in fat and high in fiber. It’s full of cancer-fighting antioxidants and flavonoids and is a good source of minerals like potassium and manganese. Moreover, a portion of strawberries has more Vitamin C than an orange, making this fruit a great option if you want to give your immune system a boost.
Even better than something chocolaty and strawberries is a combination of the two. With only about 40 calories per portion, it’s a much better option than, say, a cupcake, which has five times the amount of calories or a small, glazed doughnut with about three times the calorie content. Even a supposedly healthy treat like a granola bar can have as much as 100 to 200 calories.
Making the snacks is incredibly easy and you can even get the kids to help. You’ll need to melt about a cup of chocolate for every dozen strawberries. Then simply wash and dry the fruit very well, take each one by the stem and dip it into the melted bliss. Twirl it around a bit to let the excess drip back into the bowl and then place on a lined baking sheet and refrigerate for about 30 minutes to set.
For variety, try different types of chocolate. Dark is healthiest but you can try milk or white too. It looks great if you combine the different types and for some extra texture, you may even add nuts or sprinkles.
One thing to remember is that the melting process can be a little tricky. It’s very easy to overheat chocolate in the microwave and this will make it thick or even burn it. An alternative is to place the solid pieces in a bowl over boiling water so that the steam will create the heat you need. Stir often and don’t let it come into contact with any water or it will become lumpy and unusable.
150g milk chocolate
150g dark chocolate
150g white chocolate
750g large strawberries, washed, dried
Line a baking tray with baking paper. Break milk chocolate into even pieces. Place into a heat-proof bowl.
One-third fill a saucepan with water. Bring to the boil over high heat. Reduce heat to low. Place chocolate bowl over saucepan (don’t let bowl touch water). Stir with a metal spoon until smooth.
Dip one-third of the strawberries into chocolate. Place onto tray. Repeat with dark and white chocolate. Refrigerate until set.
